Less than a week remains before the deadline to form the Evaluation Committees of the Judiciary expires. The ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Loretta Ortiz and Yasmín Esquivel, presented their proposals to Norma Piña to be part of this body responsible for evaluating candidates for the Judiciary.
In a letter shared by Minister Loretta Ortiz, they rely on the reform to the Judiciary approved last month in both Chambers. These Evaluation Committees, composed of five prominent individuals in the legal field, will be crucial in the selection of judges, magistrates, and members of the Supreme Court in June 2025.
Among the functions outlined in the letter presented to the President of the Supreme Court, it is highlighted that the Evaluation Committee will receive the files of the candidates, will evaluate legal and constitutional requirements, and will select the most suitable candidates in terms of technical knowledge, honesty, competence, and academic and professional background in the legal activity.
The ministers' proposals for the Evaluation Committee include Dr. Leoba Castañeda Rivas, Dr. Ruth Villanueva Castilleja, Ms. Silvia Gabriela Ortiz Rascón, Dr. Raúl Plascencia Villanueva, and Dr. Manuel Becerra Ramírez. These names come from the call issued by the Senate of the Republic on October 15.
According to Morena deputy Ricardo Monreal Ávila, the Political Coordination Board will receive the proposals for the Evaluation Committee this week, and a vote is expected to take place in the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies next Tuesday, the 29th. October 31 is the deadline to form the Evaluation Committees, and each power of the Union must present five candidate proposals.
