The National Electoral Institute (INE) decided to postpone the possible cost of organizing the judicial election and approved a draft budget for 2025 totaling 27 billion 271 million pesos. This amount was endorsed by the INE's Temporary Budget Committee and includes a provision for a possible public consultation next year, which must be discussed and approved by the Chamber of Deputies next November.
The election of judges, magistrates, and ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) is scheduled for June 2025, which will represent extraordinary expenses for the INE; however, this provision has not yet been approved. The projected budget for this election in the Judiciary amounts to over 12 billion 936.4 million pesos, a decision that was made in a subsequent private session with the presence of representatives from political parties and the internal control body.
If this scenario is considered, the election of judges, magistrates, and ministers of the Court, as a result of the reform to the Judiciary on September 16, would become the most expensive elections in history, surpassing those of 2022, in which nearly 9 billion pesos were allocated for the presidential elections, federal deputies, and senators.
Within the 27 billion 271 million pesos approved, a total of 15 billion 296 million pesos was requested for daily operations, 7 billion 352 million pesos were allocated to political parties, and an expenditure of 4 billion 621 million pesos was projected for a popular consultation. Additionally, this budget includes the organization of local elections in Durango and Veracruz.
