Debate on Constitutional Supremacy Reform Stalls

In the Chamber of Deputies, the debate on the "constitutional supremacy" reform proposed by Morena, the PT, and the PVEM was stalled after a rapid and abrupt session in the Constitutional Points Commission. The opposition formed by the PRI, PAN, and MC managed to pressure to postpone the debate on the amendments to articles 105 and 107 of the Constitution until the following day, arguing a lack of time to properly analyze the issue.

Amid accusations of "surprise attacks" from the opposition, the Commission declared itself in permanent session with the intention of discussing and voting on the opinion of the bill that contained the reforms approved in the Senate. The president of the commission, Leonel Godoy from Morena, defended the decision by saying that the process had been agreed upon in advance and that an extraordinary session had been scheduled to address the issue broadly and respectfully.

In response to the criticism and protests from opposition legislators, it was decided to postpone the discussion until the following day at 18:00 hours. During the meeting, the MC deputies led by Claudia Ruiz Massieu and Ivonne Ortega left the session in disagreement with the urgency of the process and the lack of participation in the debate. For her part, deputy Paulina Rubio from PAN criticized the lack of consultation with experts and the irregular speed at which progress was intended on the issue.

The coordinator of the PRI, Rubén Moreira, accepted the proposal to extend the discussion until the following afternoon to meet the deadlines established in the regulations. Despite the tensions and differences, it is expected that the debate will resume and an agreement will be reached on the issue of constitutional supremacy in the coming days.
