Complaint for Illegal Tree Cutting in Benito Juárez

The mayor of Benito Juárez, Luis Mendoza, filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General's Office of Justice of Mexico City (FGJCDMX) for the illegal logging of at least five trees in the Portales neighborhood. The complaint was made after it became known on social media that in previous days, workers were cutting down rubber trees and ash trees on the streets of Repúblicas and Antillas in the Benito Juárez borough, which generated anger among the neighbors due to this environmental criminal act.

In this regard, Luis Mendoza affirmed his commitment not to allow these illegal acts to go unpunished, suggesting that the illegal logging likely had private motivations. He announced his determination to pursue the matter to the highest instances to resolve this case. According to the mayor's statements, "I am at the Attorney General's Office of Benito Juárez because I came to report the events that have been occurring, sadly, due to the illegal logging of trees in some neighborhoods of the borough; I do not know the motives, surely private, but we will be very attentive to report and clarify responsibilities and go to the last instance."

In the complaint made via social media, residents of the Portales neighborhood detailed that a group of individuals, wearing civilian clothing, carried out the logging, an act that could constitute an environmental crime according to the Penal Code of CDMX. Article 345 Bis establishes logging, destruction, and felling of trees as a crime.

The mayor of Benito Juárez reaffirmed his commitment to the environment and ensured that this case would be carefully followed up until those responsible for the illegal logging are identified and punished. Mendoza expressed: "What I seek is for Benito Juárez to feel and know that we are pro-green, in favor of trees, and that there is no greater interest; the only interest is for us to do well altogether."
