The Constitutional Points Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved this Monday, October 28, the initiative of constitutional supremacy proposed by Morena to "shield" the reform of the Judicial Branch. The vote resulted in 30 in favor, 11 against, and no abstentions, thus achieving the qualified majority required for its approval in general and in particular.
The discussion of the reform was hindered in the morning by the opposition parties PAN, PRI, and MC, who criticized the urgency with which the opinion was being processed. After its approval, the bill will be sent to committees for discussion and voting in the Plenary next Tuesday, October 29, or Wednesday, October 30, 2024.
On the other hand, the Senate approved on Friday, October 25, an opinion that prevents amparos and controversies against constitutional reforms. Morena senator Óscar Cantón Zetina presented the proposal, which was sent to the Chamber of Deputies for the corresponding legislative process.
The proposed reform seeks to modify articles 105 and 107 of the Constitution to protect the reforms recently approved by the ruling majority, such as the election of judges and the elimination of autonomous bodies. Although it has the support of Morena, the PT, and the PVEM, the opposition parties fear that this measure could jeopardize the balance of powers in the country.
If approved, the reform would represent a significant change in the legal system by limiting legal avenues to challenge Congressional decisions and reinforcing legislative control over constitutional reforms.
