In the western Mexican state of Michoacán, a group of alleged hitmen has shot to death Lizbeth Estela Romero Tafolla, director of Public Security in the municipality of Angamacutiro. The tragic event took place when the police official was leaving her home around 07:00 local time.
According to the authorities of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE), Lizbeth Estela Romero was attacked with assault rifles by at least four men who then fled in a vehicle through the streets of Angamacutiro. The border area of Michoacán and Jalisco is under an operation by the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and the Civil Guard (State Police) in order to apprehend those responsible for the crime.
It has been identified that in this region operate cells of various drug trafficking groups such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Los Viagras (United Cartels), The Knights Templar, and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel. Lizeth Estela Romero assumed the direction of Public Security of Angamacutiro just last September, in a municipality governed by Mayor Hermes Arnulfo Pacheco Bribiesca, from the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).
This terrible incident adds to the murder of Aurelio Santos Contreras, former mayor of the Michoacán municipality of Cotija, which also occurred on Monday morning at the hands of alleged hitmen. Santos Contreras governed Cotija from 2018 to 2021 after winning the elections with the support of Morena, but last June he lost the mayoralty after running as a candidate for the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).
