Claudia Sheinbaum comments on the rumored resignations of Supreme Court ministers, attributing it to a strategy to secure retirement benefits before judicial reforms are enacted.

Controversy Over Possible Resignations in Mexico's Supreme Court

Rumors about the possible resignation of at least eight ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) have generated controversy in recent days. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has stated that this decision is due to a strategy by the officials to ensure they maintain their benefits, especially in light of the application of a reform to the Judiciary.

According to Sheinbaum, the ministers are seeking to resign before the controversial reform comes into effect, which would affect their retirement benefits. By presenting their resignation now, they could ensure they receive all the entitlements related to their retirement, which represents a considerable sum of money.

The president has pointed out that the reform in question, in its seventh transitory article, establishes conditions for the retirement of the SCJN Ministers whose term ends. To receive their full retirement benefits, they must resign before a key date related to the 2025 election process. Otherwise, they would be excluded from receiving this benefit in full.

The deadline to present the resignation in question is October 30, a deadline that some ministers may be considering at this moment. This situation highlights the importance of these "retirement benefits," which represent a significant part of the monthly income of the ministers, reaching amounts of up to 700 thousand pesos between salary and benefits, according to the president.
