Judicial Reform in Mexico

Eight ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation have announced their decision to resign from their positions starting in August 2025, when the current full court is dissolved. This measure is part of a reform of the Judicial Power that will reduce the number of members of the Supreme Court from 11 to six.

Among the ministers who will remain in their positions are Lenia Batres, Yasmín Esquivel, and Loretta Ortiz. It is expected that, starting next year, they will participate in the election process for judges, which is considered a relevant step towards the democratization of this body.

The reform of the Judicial Power has generated intense debate in the Chamber of Deputies, particularly around the constitutional supremacy initiative, which could strengthen and ensure the effectiveness of the amparo reform. Despite this, the resignation of eight ministers will facilitate an open process for citizen participation in the election of the new members of the High Court.

Judge Juan José Olvera has emphasized that the resignation of the ministers will allow the people to decide who will occupy those positions in the future. This decision is interpreted as an effort to end the crisis surrounding this reform, as it seeks to pave the way for greater social participation in the appointment of high judicial authorities.

Despite the different approaches regarding the method of selecting judges and ministers, the resignation of eight members of the Supreme Court marks an important milestone in the process of reforming the Judicial Power. In this context, it is expected that the popular election of the new members of the Court will be a central topic in legislative discussions. The confirmation of the ministers' decision must be made before October 31.
