The issuance of the new permanent driver's license in Mexico City will have a cost of 1,500 pesos, according to the transitional articles established in an initiative sent by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, to the capital congress. The Finance Secretariat of CDMX will create a trust to manage the resources derived from this issuance, allocating them to public transport and mobility infrastructure.
If the reform is approved, the new permanent driver's license will begin to be issued from November until December 2025 in Mexico City. Drivers will have one year to complete the procedure. The modules of the Mobility Secretariat (Semovi) will be responsible for granting these licenses. The Mobility Secretary, Héctor Ulises García, mentioned that the process will be hybrid, allowing both in-person and digital procedures.
To carry out the procedure, it will be necessary to have the CDMX Key, which includes biometric data and provides security to the user. Drivers applying for the license for the first time will need to take a digital exam, which will cover topics related to regulations, mobility laws, road safety, and types of transport. Among the requirements to obtain this new license are having a valid license, not having been convicted of traffic crimes, and not having been sanctioned by the breathalyzer.
The approval of the return of this procedure is imminent after being endorsed in the finance commission of the Mexico City congress. Deputy Pablo Trejo, president of the commission and member of the PRD, indicated that the reform proposed by the Head of Government will regulate the procedures in the capital, in addition to including a fund to improve road infrastructure and culture. The modifications include the introduction of the permanent type "A" license for driving private cars.
