Controversy Arises Over Judicial Committee in Mexico

Political tensions escalate in Mexico as the PAN party rejects participation in the newly formed Committee for Evaluating Judicial Candidates, calling it a sham. Opposition parties denounce the lack of transparency and legitimacy in the legislative process pushed by the ruling party, Morena, claiming it threatens judicial independence and democracy.

Controversy Arises Over Judicial Committee in Mexico

The Chamber of Deputies approved the Agreement of the Board of Directors for the installation of the Technical Evaluation Committee that will determine the "eligibility and suitability" of candidates for judicial positions in the extraordinary electoral process of 2024-2025. With 326 votes in favor, 15 abstentions, and 102 votes against, the agreement was approved. The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Gutierrez Luna, a member of the Morena party, had previously disseminated this agreement.

Among the five proposed names to integrate the Technical Evaluation Committee are Maday Merino Damián, Maribel Concepción Méndez De Lara, Ana Patricia Briseño Torres, Andrés Norberto García Repper Favila, and María Gabriela Sánchez García. These individuals will act as a filter for the candidacies to be considered in the voting next year for judges, ministers, and justices of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, in the context of the controversial reform of the Judicial Branch.

The Parliamentary Group of the PAN denounced what it considers a "simulation" in the designation of the Evaluation Committee and announced that it will not be part of it. They expressed that the election is born without legitimacy or transparency and will not endorse what they perceive as a simulation, committing to defend independent justice.

The PAN, the PRI, and Movimiento Ciudadano also joined this stance of not participating in the Committee, rejecting the judicial reform promoted by Morena. In a statement, the GPPAN described the situation as an assault on the rights of citizens and a blatant mockery, accusing Morena of transforming Congress into a "factory of complicities."
