On October 29, Mexico's Senate approved the formation of a Judicial Evaluation Committee, essential for vetting candidates for judges and magistrates in the 2025 elections. This process is part of a broader judicial reform aimed at enhancing the integrity of the judiciary.

Senate Approves Judicial Evaluation Committee

On October 29, the full Senate of the Republic approved the agreement for the integration of the Committee for the Evaluation of the Federal Legislative Power. This committee will be responsible for evaluating the candidates seeking to hold positions such as judges, magistrates, and ministers in the extraordinary election of 2025. With 75 votes in favor and 40 against, the five candidates to be part of the committee were approved, and the report now goes to the Chamber of Deputies.

The members of the Committee for the Evaluation of the Judiciary will be Maribel Méndez, Ana Briseño, María Sánchez, Maday Merino, and Andrés García Repper. This committee will determine the eligibility of candidates for positions in the 2025 electoral process.

The Committee for the Evaluation of the Judiciary will receive the files of the candidates, evaluate compliance with constitutional and legal requirements, identify the most qualified individuals with the necessary technical knowledge, and who stand out for their honesty, good public reputation, competence, and academic and professional background in legal activity.

Each of the Powers of the Union must present five proposals for candidates. For its part, the Court presented Ministers Loretta Ortiz and Yasmín Esquivel, who in turn presented Norma Piña as their proposals to integrate the Evaluation Committee. The proposals are supported by the recently approved reform to the Judiciary, which has been subject to judicial suspensions. In compliance with the reform, each Power of the Union must form an Evaluation Committee made up of five distinguished individuals in legal activity.
