Judicial Reform and Political Trial in Mexico

The Political Trial request against Supreme Court ministers has been filed, accusing them of undermining democracy and violating constitutional supremacy. Deputies from the Labor Party claim this action reflects public demand for accountability in defense of democratic institutions.

Judicial Reform and Political Trial in Mexico

The Labor Party (PT) in the Chamber of Deputies has presented a request for impeachment against ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) for opposing the constitutional reform of the Judiciary. This request, despite the contrary recommendation of President Claudia Sheinbaum, seeks to sanction the ministers if the process results in a conviction.

Impeachment is a constitutional process that involves the Chamber of Deputies as the accusing body and the Senate as the sentencing body. It begins in cases where the actions or omissions of public servants harm public interests, according to Article 110 of the Constitution and the Federal Law of Responsibilities of Public Servants.

The reasons that can lead to impeachment include attacks on democratic institutions, the republican form of government, violations of human rights, among others. This procedure can only begin while the public servant is in office and must be resolved within a maximum of one year from its initiation.

The PT's request for impeachment involves several ministers of the SCJN, accusing them of attacking democratic institutions and violating constitutional supremacy. The deputies who presented the document, led by Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, have characterized these ministers as "coup plotters" and part of a conspiracy to sabotage judicial reform.

In Mejía Berdeja's words, this process seeks to sanction the alleged rebellion of the ministers and protect institutions and the republican form of government. Deputy Lilia Aguilar added that the request responds to the demands of various voices in the Mexican people calling for this impeachment as a response to the actions of the SCJN ministers.
