INE Counselors Challenge New Powers

Six counselors from the INE challenge before the Supreme Court the new powers granted to President Guadalupe Taddei, arguing that they violate the autonomy of the institute.

INE Counselors Challenge New Powers

Six counselors of the National Electoral Institute (INE) are seeking to challenge before the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation the new powers granted by Congress to the president of the General Council, Guadalupe Taddei. The modification in question would allow the president of the General Council to make appointments of key officials in the institute, a power that previously lay with the entire General Council.

The counselors argue that this reform undermines the constitutional autonomy of the INE and weakens the General Council by strengthening the position of its president. The appeal request is supported by six of the eleven counselors: Arturo Castillo, Carla Humphrey, Dania Ravel, Claudia Zavala, Martín Faz, and Jaime Rivera.

The appeal process will be carried out through a session of the General Council of the INE and will be approved by the aforementioned majority. The Executive Secretariat will be responsible for drafting and presenting the lawsuit by November 19. It is expected to request the Supreme Court to accept the process urgently and issue a suspension to prevent Taddei's new powers from coming into effect.
