Resignation of Minister Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena

Minister Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena submitted his resignation to the Supreme Court of Mexico. In his resignation letter, he emphasized the role of judges in protecting the rights of those who need it most, rather than validating the will of the majorities. He explained that his resignation is due to a constitutional reform that shortens his term, and stated that true triumph is not clinging to the position, but knowing when to leave gracefully, recognizing that no one is indispensable.

On the other hand, President Claudia Sheinbaum has been accused of inciting a lynching against the members of the Court who resign, publicly humiliating them and threatening to make public the amounts of money they will receive. Meanwhile, at a conference, she disqualified a project presented by another Court minister, claiming it was unconstitutional, which generated controversy.

Minister Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena's resignation letter highlights the difference between the minister's attitude and the aggressive behavior of the president and her supporters. It is mentioned that the resignation of several Court ministers is a consequence of pressure to participate in an electoral farce, which has been labeled an infamy. Additionally, the lack of government responsibility regarding combating insecurity in the country is criticized.

Amid this controversy, the respect for constitutional principles expressed by the resigning minister is highlighted, who believes that public offices are temporary and must be held with dignity. The current situation has generated various opinions regarding the independence and role of the Supreme Court in the judicial system of Mexico.
