Martha Bárcena Calls for Stronger Diplomacy in US

The Mexican ambassador to the United States, Martha Bárcena, emphasized the importance of having an experienced diplomat as the head of the embassy in Washington who is unafraid to take risks. In an interview, Bárcena mentioned the need to confront various challenges in the bilateral relationship with the United States and the urgency of defending Mexico's positions in different areas, from Congress to the media and universities.

The ambassador highlighted that the lack of action in foreign policy during the previous administration left the bilateral relationship in an unfavorable position, which she termed a 'cursed inheritance.' According to Bárcena, it is essential to face and take on the risks involved in defending Mexico's interests in a context of electoral uncertainty in the United States.

Analysts agreed that the distrust of the United States towards Mexico is a structural and bipartisan issue, a perception shared by both Democrats and Republicans. With the presidential elections in the United States approaching, an atmosphere of uncertainty has emerged in the contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

For researcher Carlos Heredia, the Mexican government is not fully prepared to face the upcoming challenges, making it necessary to strategically rethink the bilateral relationship. The concerns of the American political establishment regarding Mexico are reflected in aspects such as border control, the review of the USMCA, and cooperation in security matters.

In this context, José Luis Valdés pointed to the lack of prospective and strategic preparation by Mexico regarding the United States, emphasizing the importance of rethinking how to approach the complex relationship between the two countries.
