Minister Margarita Ríos Farjat announced her resignation from the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) and the retirement pension she is entitled to, stating that she will not participate in the popular election of ministers. In a letter, the minister expressed her rejection of the conditions imposed by the reform that limits her position until August 31, 2025.
In her statements, Minister Ríos Farjat mentioned that she finds it inappropriate to have to submit her resignation but remain in the position for a few more months to preserve rights, or to remain in the position without resigning but giving up the corresponding rights. Therefore, she decided to effectively resign on August 31, 2025, in opposition to these conditions that she considers strange.
In a gesture to maintain her dignity, the minister stated that she will not receive the lifetime salary that members of the Court are entitled to and chooses not to accept the monthly payment she would be entitled to as a future retired member of the institution. Additionally, Ríos Farjat is considering whether to return that money to the Treasury of the Federation or donate it to children in vulnerable situations.
The minister emphasized the importance of future generations and the need for empathy, solidarity, and civic education in the country, highlighting that these values influence the well-being of the following generations. In this regard, she explained that her reasons for rejecting the money are related to the dilemma imposed on the ministers by the reform, which limits their tenure in the Court.
