Minister Margarita Ríos Farjat has sent a letter to the Senate of the Republic announcing her resignation from participating in the election of ministers scheduled by the judicial reform for July 2025. Additionally, she resigns from her position in the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation effective August 31 of next year, and from the retirement benefits she would be entitled to according to the judicial reform itself.
In the letter, Minister Ríos Farjat expresses that she does not wish to be considered for the extraordinary election of 2025, but she will continue to work for the benefit of the nation during her term and beyond. Citing the seventh transitory article of the judicial reform, which establishes the conditions for ministers who conclude their term, she states her decision to resign from her position effective August 31, 2025.
Moreover, the minister points out the contradictions of the judicial reform, particularly regarding the request for resignation from ministers who do not participate in next year's elections but are required to remain in office until after the electoral process. She emphasizes that, in any case, she will continue to fulfill her duties until the established date.
To show her rejection of the judicial reform and to preserve her dignity and personal freedom, the minister decides not to accept the monthly payment she would be entitled to as a future retiree member of the Court, and she commits to returning that money to the Treasury of the Federation or donating it to children in vulnerable situations.
Previously, three other ministers also submitted their resignations and declines: Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Jorge Mario Pardo Rebolledo, and Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá.
