Norma Piña, president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), and 7 ministers submitted their resignation to the Senate of the Republic. The news was announced by Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the board of directors, who informed that eight ministers, including Norma Piña, Margarita Ríos Farjat, Jorge Pardo, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Alberto Pérez Dayán, Juan Luis González Alcantara, Javier Laynez, and Luis María Aguilar, had submitted their resignations.
Luis María Aguilar had only one month left in the SCJN, as his term was ending on November 30. On the other hand, Javier Laynez and Norma Piña would soon have completed 9 years in their positions.
In a letter sent to the Senate, Minister Javier Laynez Potisek announced his resignation and his decision not to participate as a candidate for minister in the extraordinary electoral process of 2024-2025, which will take place on June 1, 2025. In the letter, Laynez indicated that he was submitting his resignation before the constitutional term for which he was appointed as Minister of the SCJN, in accordance with the reform to the Judiciary.
Gerardo Fernández Noroña politicized the announcement of the ministers' resignations by claiming that some had misspelled their names. Except for two ministers, he mentioned that their name had been misspelled and emphasized his request for it to be written correctly.
According to the Constitution, ministers can only resign for serious causes, and the resignations must be approved by the majority of those present in the upper house. The judicial reform allowed current ministers to resign and enjoy their retirement benefits. The Senate president communicated that the Legislative Evaluation Committee, which will vet candidates for judicial election, will be formed tomorrow.
The process for the election of judges, ministers, and magistrates of the Judiciary will take place on the first Sunday of June 2025.
