Luis María Aguilar Morales has submitted his resignation from the position of minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN). In a letter sent to the Senate's Board of Directors, he affirmed his decision to leave the position on November 30 after completing his 15-year term, which began on December 1, 2009. In the letter, Aguilar Morales emphasized his work on fundamental issues for the Mexican Constitutional Court, focusing on justice and the protection of the human rights of all citizens of the country.
In his statement, Aguilar Morales expressed his intention not to seek elected office. He stated his resignation from running as a candidate for minister of the SCJN or another position in the 2024 - 2025 electoral process, formalizing his resignation from the position of minister of the SCJN on October 29, 2024, effective November 30, 2024, at the end of his term appointed by the Senate.
Hamlet García Almaguer, national counselor of Morena, opined that Aguilar's resignation is not related to the judicial reform, as he had no right to participate in the planned election. Norma Piña, the president minister, also submitted her resignation, along with 7 of the 11 ministers that make up the Plenary of the Supreme Court, as an act of consistency. The resignations will be effective until August 2025, and they commit not to compete to remain in the SCJN in the judicial election next year, with Piña resigning to be considered on the list of candidates.
