INE Faces Legal Challenges Ahead of Judicial Elections

The National Electoral Institute (INE) is entangled in legal uncertainties regarding the judicial election preparations due to over 240 federal injunctions. INE's Council member, Arturo Castillo Loza, highlights the urgency for the Supreme Court to address the injunctions to facilitate the 2025 election organization.

INE Faces Legal Challenges Ahead of Judicial Elections

The National Electoral Institute (INE) is being affected by the resolution of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) that allows it to continue preparing for the election planned in the judicial reform, despite more than 240 amparo suspensions granted by federal judges ordering to stop the judicial election. This situation of legal indefiniteness was acknowledged by INE Counselor, Arturo Castillo Loza, who pointed out that the time to organize the election for various judicial positions has run out due to the complexity of the situation.

Castillo Loza recalled that federal legislative elections are planned one year in advance, but in the case of the judicial election, the timelines are already in motion and the INE has not been able to define the organization due to the restrictions imposed by the amparo suspensions. Although the General Council of the INE has not had formal sessions to address the issue, informal meetings have been held among counselors to try to establish a plan once the legal problem is resolved.

In light of this situation, Arturo Castillo considers it crucial for the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) to attract all the amparos related to the judicial reform so that they can be resolved in the Plenary of the highest court, allowing the INE to advance in the organization of the judicial election. Regarding the challenges presented, the counselor acknowledged the lack of internal consensus in the INE and pointed out that it is up to the SCJN to resolve these challenges.

In this sense, he suggested that the President Counselor of the INE, Guadalupe Taddei, send an urgent request to the Supreme Court to prioritize cases related to the judicial reform and clear the way for the organization of the election. This initiative aims to accelerate the process and avoid further delays in the planning of the 2025 judicial election.
