President Claudia Sheinbaum is awarded the 2024 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to Sustainability by the Nobel Sustainability Trust for her initiatives on sustainability and climate change during her tenure as head of government in Mexico City.


Claudia Sheinbaum Receives Nobel Sustainability Medal

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo will be honored with the 2024 Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability from the Nobel Sustainability Trust. This recognition will be awarded for her initiatives in sustainability, climate change, and urban innovation during her tenure as head of Government of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023, reported the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard. "They have decided to grant her this highly prestigious recognition for her initiatives from Mexico City in the field of sustainability, renewable energies, actions for climate change mitigation, urban innovation," Ebrard assured. Due to this, the Secretary of Economy congratulated the leader for being awarded this prize, which also recognizes Mexico on the international stage.

Furthermore, Ebrard shared the five initiatives that led the Nobel Sustainability Trust to honor the president of Mexico, for which she was described as "a global example of leadership in sustainability."

Innovative Urban Policies: during her administration as head of Government of Mexico City, the leader promoted carbon emission reductions by expanding public transport, creating green spaces, and encouraging sustainable mobility.

Climate Leadership: for being a firm advocate of climate action, aligning the city’s commitments with international agreements, and reaffirming the importance of cities in the fight against climate change.

Community Participation: political initiatives that fostered active citizen participation in environmental decision-making, promoting a culture of sustainability from the community level.

Promotion of Renewable Energies: for her promotion of clean energy use, such as solar energy, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Resilience Initiatives: recognizing the vulnerability of urban areas to climate change, for which she has made efforts to strengthen sustainable infrastructure and disaster preparedness.

President Claudia Sheinbaum was invited to the ceremony that will take place on November 20 and 21 at the University of Berkeley, where the medal will be awarded.
