Resignations Rock Mexico's Supreme Court

The resignation of several ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has shaken the legal sphere. Jorge Mario Pardo Rebolledo, in his resignation letter, emphasized his over 40 years of experience in the judicial career, highlighting his integrity and impartial performance. He decided not to participate in the extraordinary election of 2025, mentioning "injuries and insults" he has been subjected to.

Margarita Ríos Farjat also declined to participate in the judicial elections and submitted her resignation to the SCJN. She refused to accept the retirement benefit established in the judicial reform, considering that it would affect her dignity and freedom. Norma Lucía Piña Hernández, president of the SCJN, resigned in an act of consistency and respect for the constitutional text governing the country.

Javier Laynez Potisek and Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá joined the resignations of their colleagues, rejecting to participate in the 2025 electoral process. González Alcántara Carrancá expressed his disappointment over the prevalence of passions over sincere reason.

In a joint decision, Norma Lucía Piña Hernández, Margarita Ríos Farjat, Jorge Pardo, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Alberto Pérez Dayán, Juan Luis González Alcántara, Javier Laynez, and Luis María Aguilar submitted their resignations. This resignation does not imply conformity with the judicial election planned for 2025. The resignations will be effective as of August 31 of next year.

Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Luis María Aguilar Morales, and Alberto Pérez Dayán also communicated their resignation, each with their specific reasons. They mentioned the importance of respecting institutions and the validity of existing norms. The resignations have caused an uproar in the judicial field, raising questions about the future of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.
