The president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, Norma Piña, announced her resignation on October 31, which will take effect on August 31, 2025. This decision was made following the approval of the reform to the Judiciary. Norma Piña was the first woman in Mexico to assume the presidency of the Supreme Court in January 2023, replacing Arturo Zaldívar.
In her resignation letter, Norma Piña expressed that she had assumed her position as president of the Supreme Court with commitment, honor, and conviction. She stated that her decision to resign was based on the rules established in the Constitution, which were modified by the judicial reform enacted on September 15.
Norma Piña, along with seven other ministers, declined to participate in the election of judges and ministers that will take place next year. Among the ministers who also submitted their resignation to the Senate are Margarita Ríos Farjat, Jorge Pardo, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Alberto Pérez Dayán, Juan Luis González Alcántara, Javier Laynez, and Luis María Aguilar.
Despite the controversy and criticisms surrounding Norma Piña's resignation, her management at the head of the Supreme Court was recognized by several employees of the Judiciary. Videos were circulated on social media showing Court employees applauding and showing support for the outgoing minister.
The Evaluation Committee, appointed by the Supreme Court, will be responsible for selecting the candidates who will participate in the electoral process for the election of judges, magistrates, and ministers next year. The members of this committee were approved by representatives of the Judiciary, the Executive Branch led by Claudia Sheinbaum, and the Union Congress.
