The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that there will be no funding for political parties in the elections of judges, ministers, and magistrates in 2025, marking a significant change in the electoral process. Sheinbaum emphasized that the figure of 13 billion pesos has been supported for this purpose, ensuring that this amount can be met without affecting the Government's budget in 2025.
In a morning conference, Sheinbaum expressed her concern about the increase in the expected expenditure for these elections, which in previous weeks was estimated at around 7 billion pesos, while now it is proposed to be around 13.5 billion pesos, almost double the initially projected amount. In light of this situation, she requested the INE to review the data presented.
The election of officials from the Judiciary, including judges, ministers, and magistrates, has recently generated controversy after the INE revealed the estimated budget for the electoral process in 2025 and the discrepancy with Sheinbaum's position. The reform to the Judiciary provides for the start of elections for these positions beginning next year, which will involve an increase in spending for the INE.
Despite the disagreements between the INE and Sheinbaum, as well as with the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit, the Mexican president asserted that the electoral process will not have a significant impact on the budget, as resources will be obtained from the trusts eliminated by the reform to the Judiciary. Sheinbaum assured that a review will be conducted to reduce the initially projected expenditure in the election of ministers, judges, and magistrates.
