Cynthia López Castro Leaves PRI for Morena

Senator Cynthia López Castro confirmed her resignation from the PRI and her adherence to Morena, the majority party in Mexico. The decision was announced in a social media photo alongside the national president of Morena, Luisa María Alcalde.

In her statements, López Castro expressed: "After a profound reflection, I have decided to join the project led by the first woman President of Mexico, in whom I trust and who motivates me to work for a single cause: Mexico. Ready to continue working for Mexico 🇲🇽."

This party migration could be crucial to solidify Morena's qualified majority, which is necessary to approve reforms to the Constitution. López Castro’s political career began in the PRI of the State of Mexico, where she held various positions in the federal public administration during the government of Enrique Peña Nieto.

López Castro thanked the president of Morena for her reception and support. In the past, she had proclaimed herself "loyal" or "always loyal" to Peña Nieto and other tricolor political operators, particularly to Aurelio Nuño. The senator had been critical of those who left the PRI in search of political opportunities in other parties, as well as with Andrés Manuel López Obrador, both as a candidate and as President of Mexico.

During her time as a federal legislator, she positioned herself against the policies promoted by the Morena government.
