The appointments of Tom Homan and Stephen Miller by President-elect Donald Trump may signal stricter immigration policies, raising concerns among migrants in the U.S. and Mexico.

Trump's New Appointments Raise Concerns for Migrants

The appointments of elected president Donald Trump for his upcoming administration have raised concerns as Tom Homan and Stephen Miller could be the authors of the harshest immigration policies in the United States.

According to the column by Raymundo Riva Palacio in El Financiero, the appointment of these two hardline and radical officials on immigration could exert great pressure on Claudia Sheinbaum's government. Riva Palacio emphasizes that the selection of these officials is significant, as Trump did not need to review profiles for these positions, choosing individuals who completely share his objectives.

Homan was appointed to oversee all deportations of illegal immigrants to their home countries and was the public face of the "zero tolerance" policies during the first term. On the other hand, Miller, who also worked as an advisor to Trump in the White House during the first term, was the architect of controversial immigration and border policies, including the contentious policy of separating migrant children from their parents.

The appointments of Homan and Miller to these new roles indicate that their positions will be much more prominent in Trump's second term. This suggests greater emphasis on immigration from the president, with potential consequences for the relationship with Mexico.

According to the columnist, the Republican president's team has requested relevant information from the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, about the Mexican government's positions and ideas on issues such as trade agreements, immigration, and organized crime. There is an expectation in Washington that before taking office, Trump could make strong announcements about his plans with Mexico.
