López Castro Positions Herself as a Candidate for Mayor

Senator Cynthia López Castro finally confirmed her affiliation with Morena this Monday. The news did not surprise many, as there had been speculation about her possible party change since her departure from the PRI. López Castro announced her decision to join the project led by Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressing confidence in her and her motivation to work for the country.

Amid rumors and speculation, López Castro is already being mentioned as a possible candidate for mayor of Cuauhtémoc in the 2027 elections. Her approach to Morena has been noticeable in recent weeks, and her decision to join the party opens the door to a potential competition against Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, the current strong figure in the district and with a close relationship with the head of government, Clara Brugada.

Alessandra Rojo de la Vega finally obtained the ballot to compete as a candidate, prevailing over Catalina Monreal. On the other hand, Senator López Castro has maintained some distance from Rojo de la Vega due to disputes arising around the candidacy, thus marking a path that could signify an interesting competition in the upcoming elections.

The senator has been building her way towards this candidacy, marked by her abrupt departure from the PRI and her criticisms of Alito Moreno, as well as her recent meeting with Claudia Sheinbaum and the organization of an international meeting of women parliamentarians in Mexico in 2025. In a public statement, López Castro highlighted her commitment to Sheinbaum's project and her intention to work for the good of Mexico, positioning her as an important figure to consider in the political landscape towards 2027.
