The National Defense Secretariat (Defense) reported on Tuesday, November 9, 2024, that the National Guard, Mexican Army, and the Attorney General's Office (FGR) secured approximately 187 packages containing marijuana in Chiapas. In a press release, Defense indicated that during a raid on a property with the facade of a mechanic's workshop, high-powered weapons and vehicles with homemade armor were discovered.
In investigations coordinated by the National Intelligence Fusion Center (CENFI) and the FGR, a property in the 30th neighborhood of the capital Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, was identified. The National Guard and the Mexican Army received the order to secure the 187 packages of marijuana. Each package weighed between 3 and 5 kilograms, which were handed over to the FGR for analysis.
64 high-powered firearms were seized, along with magazines and cartridges of various calibers, as well as 29 vehicles, some of which had homemade armor. Drugs seized by the government are usually destroyed to prevent their commercialization and consumption in the market, as well as to combat drug trafficking in the country.
Drugs are typically destroyed through incineration, burial, or dissolution in chemical solutions to render them unusable. This process occurs when drugs are not used as evidence in judicial proceedings. Occasionally, the government holds public events to showcase the destruction of drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, or methamphetamines.
