Internal Tensions in the Government of Mexico

Less than 100 days into the new government, internal struggles within Morena are intensifying, with factions vying for power and control, highlighting divisions within the party and the cabinet.

Internal Tensions in the Government of Mexico

Less than 100 days have passed since the new government began, and internal struggles within Morena for access to positions of power and to displace those considered "unworthy" to be part of the party are already evident. Some sectors, identified as "pure morenos," have generated conflict even within the ruling bloc in the Senate.

In this sense, there have been clashes related to the appointment of the head of the CNDH, and a veiled attack is observed against close collaborators of the president of the Republic, such as Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Omar García Harfuch, Luz Elena González, David Kershenobich, Julio Berdegué, and Marcelo Ebrard, who have important roles in the current government.

Different actors in the morenista circle act, in some cases, autonomously and, in others, on behalf of interests that do not always align with those of the president. These internal clashes reflect both internal errors and discrepancies that arise in various areas within Morena.

The announcement by Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, a Morena deputy and ally of Claudia Sheinbaum, to create a political and social current called "Building the Second Floor of the Fourth Transformation" aims to strengthen support for the president while ensuring the prevalence of her leadership within the party. This could be the first step toward the eventual formation of a new political party aligned with Sheinbaum's vision.

Ramírez Cuéllar has clarified that his intention is to broaden support for Sheinbaum in civil society without dividing the Morena movement, but rather to strengthen its social and political base to fulfill the president's campaign promises. He focuses on bringing welfare programs to communities without getting involved in party conflicts.

Through this movement, an internal block is sought to be created in Morena aligned with Sheinbaum's political vision and detached from the internal disputes of the party, serving as a possible alternative in case a crisis arises within the organization. This decision by Ramírez Cuéllar could mark a turning point in the dynamics of the 4T and in the internal workings of Morena, outlining possible future scenarios in the Mexican political spectrum.
