Controversy Over Re-election of Human Rights Leader

Morenista senator Javier Corral Jurado expressed his disagreement with his party's decision to support the reelection of Rosario Piedra Ibarra as the head of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH). The reelection was endorsed with 87 votes, coinciding with the members of Morena and their allies in the Senate.

Corral stated that during the process to elect the head of the CNDH for the period 2024-2029, he was convinced that the best thing for the institution was a renewal in the presidency. He highlighted the importance of strengthening the autonomy of the CNDH, its territorial presence, and restoring dialogue with civil society organizations.

The former governor of Chihuahua mentioned that, despite respecting the decision to support Piedra Ibarra's reelection, he did not agree with it. He asserted that his position in favor of renewal was not a disqualification of Maestra Piedra, acknowledging her history, biography, and social commitment.

Corral explained that the evaluation process conducted included an open parliament with non-governmental organizations, as well as interviews with 47 candidates, which confirmed the idea of renewal among the majority of the members of the justice commission.
