The Secretary of Economy of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, reported that they are waiting for the response from the dispute panel regarding genetically modified corn by November 29. The publication of the conclusions will be on December 14. Ebrard mentioned that they are already working on possible actions to take once the final report is issued.
Regarding the possibility that Canada might consider a bilateral agreement with the United States that excludes Mexico, Ebrard expressed that this decision could have negative repercussions for Canada in terms of negotiation and competitiveness. He emphasized the importance of cohesion within the USMCA to ensure balance in negotiations and maximize trade opportunities for the three countries.
During his speech at the Colegio de México, Ebrard acknowledged that the dispute panel could rule against Mexico regarding the ban on genetically modified corn. Although the government has defended its position, the secretary indicated that there is a possibility of losing the case. They have already prepared a response strategy for this eventuality after receiving the preliminary conclusions from the panel on October 22.
