Senate Approves Security Reform in Mexico

The Senate of the Republic unanimously approved the reform that grants the Secretary of Public Security, led by Omar García Harfuch, the power to investigate crimes. With 120 votes in favor, the senators endorsed the general provisions and the unreserved articles of the bill that modifies the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States in the area of public security.

The reform to Article 21 of the Constitution aims to strengthen the powers of the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSyPC) and provide it with legal tools to participate in the investigation of crimes. Among the new responsibilities assigned to the Secretary is the coordination of the National Intelligence System in public security, as well as the ability to coordinate collaboration actions with the three levels of government to collect relevant information.

During the committee discussion, panist Ricardo Anaya expressed his support for the initiative, considering that the pacification of Mexico requires investigations under the coordination of a civilian command. He also emphasized the need to dismantle criminal organizations to effectively address the problem of organized crime, highlighting the importance of not only decapitating them but also eradicating them.

The politician anticipated that in the debate on the reform, the topic of Genaro García Luna, former Secretary of Security sentenced in the United States for his links to drug trafficking, would be addressed. In this regard, Anaya called to remember this case to learn from past mistakes and criticized the 'Hugs Not Bullets' strategy, urging to consider new ways to approach security in the country.
