Sheinbaum Defends CNDH Appointment Against Claims of Imposition

President Claudia Sheinbaum denied that her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, imposed Rosario Piedra Ibarra as head of the National Human Rights Commission. In her daily conference, Sheinbaum denounced a campaign by columnists who claim that the re-election of Piedra Ibarra to the CNDH was an order from López Obrador, while she supported Nashieli Ramírez.

"Yesterday I was reading some topics on social media, from the commentariat, and now it turns out that from Palenque López Obrador is dictating to the senators who is going to be the president of the CNDH. He has already withdrawn from public life, he is writing his book, he is engaged in other tasks," Sheinbaum argued. The president questioned the sources of analysts who suggested that Piedra Ibarra's re-election was an imposition from López Obrador.

Suspicions increased because Piedra Ibarra was the worst-rated of the candidates, presented a false recommendation letter, and did not have support from any civil association. Despite the criticisms, Adán Augusto López, coordinator of the majority in the Senate, assured that her designation was guaranteed.

Piedra Ibarra's re-election generated criticism from the opposition and civil organizations due to the human rights crisis in Mexico, but the current president of the CNDH has ignored complaints about abuses by the Armed Forces.

"First, it is incredible, look at all the notes: ‘AMLO decided who is the president of the commission’. Just let him rest in Palenque peacefully. And third, respect for Rosario," concluded Sheinbaum. Senators are adults and have the authority to decide.
