President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the remarks made by the United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, during Thursday's morning briefing. Salazar had accused that the security strategy of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did not work. Sheinbaum, belonging to the same political movement as López Obrador, criticized the lack of consistency in the ambassador's statements, stating that his previous stance differed from the one recently expressed.
In his criticisms, Salazar asserted that the strategy of "hugs not bullets" was ineffective and that there was a lack of cooperation in the previous government. He mentioned that coordination had largely failed because the previous president rejected U.S. aid and closed the door to investments. Sheinbaum emphasized that on controversial issues like judicial reform, the ambassador had changed his stance in a contradictory manner.
Regarding the accusation of lack of cooperation, Sheinbaum assured that there is indeed coordination and it will continue, but there will be no subordination. She underscored the importance of coherence in statements and reminded of Mexico's independence and sovereignty in its international relations.
