A strong fire in a vacant lot in the Diamante area of Acapulco got out of control due to intense winds, generating a dense layer of smoke that affected the Alfredo V. Bonfil neighborhood and part of the "Juan Álvarez" International Airport.
The flames started minutes after 11:30 AM in the Plan de los Amates village and spread within an hour to the airport's takeoff and landing runways. Civil Protection authorities in Acapulco, along with the Navy Secretariat (Semar), deployed an operation to extinguish the blaze.
The Semar mobilized 62 naval personnel, a MI-17 helicopter, and seven vehicles, including a command unit, an ambulance, a flatbed truck, a water tanker, a fire truck, and two pick-ups. The helicopter dropped seven loads of water, each containing two thousand liters, totaling 14 thousand liters to contain the fire.
The head of Civil Protection in Acapulco warned that the burning of garbage has been one of the main causes of urban and forest fires in the current season, urging the population to avoid these practices. The fire was controlled after hours of intense work, with no injuries or damage to critical infrastructures reported.
