Tragic Death of Activist Marco Antonio Suástegui

The activist and seeker, Marco Antonio Suástegui Muñoz, passed away last Friday due to the injuries he sustained in a shooting attack on April 18 at Icacos beach in Acapulco. His struggle for life lasted eight days in a local hospital.

Amnesty International issued a statement condemning the murder of Suástegui Muñoz, highlighting that since 2021 he had been searching for his brother Vicente. The organization also demanded that the state prosecutor's office of Guerrero conduct an effective investigation and requested protection measures for the activist's family.

Various national and international civil organizations expressed their sorrow and condemnation regarding the event. They expressed concern about the insecurity climate in Acapulco and the vulnerability of those who defend land and life in the region.

Mexican authorities, including the Undersecretary of Human Rights of the Secretariat of the Interior, Arturo Medina Padilla, emphasized the importance of not disregarding any line of investigation in the case.

The governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, expressed her solidarity with Suástegui's family and recognized him as a social leader. Despite medical efforts and the care received, Suástegui Muñoz could not survive his injuries.

Marco Antonio Suástegui Muñoz was the spokesperson for the Council of Ejidos and Communities Opposing the La Parota Dam (CECOP) and a leader of the United Tour Operators Association in Defense and Rescue of Icacos Beach. For years he defended the territories of 24 peasant communities threatened by a hydroelectric project of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
