Álvaro Fernando Coria Jiménez, who served as the chief of escorts for the mayor of Celaya, Guanajuato, Juan Miguel Ramírez Sánchez, was shot dead at his home in the Ciudadela neighborhood on the morning of Wednesday, February 12. The attack was carried out by armed men who managed to flee, triggering a search operation involving municipal, state, and federal forces. In light of this tragic event, the mayor suspended his public activities and took refuge leading the security table.
According to initial reports, the assailants broke into Coria Jiménez's home and fired several times, causing his instant death. The incident occurred around 9:30 in the morning at the corner of Plan de Ayala and Plan de Guadalupe, in front of the Industrial Zone of Celaya. Neighbors in the area reported hearing nine gunshots and then the sound of a car speeding away.
Upon receiving the alert, the municipal police and the National Guard arrived at the scene and found the victim with gunshot wounds. Despite the paramedics' efforts to save him, Coria Jiménez died from his injuries. Authorities cordoned off the area, and the state prosecutor's office began the corresponding investigations.
Jesús Paz Gómez, the mayor's personal secretary, confirmed the victim's identity and mentioned that Coria Jiménez was heading to the Municipal Presidency at the time of the attack. The chief of escorts was not protecting the mayor at that moment, as the security team operated in rotating shifts. Juan Miguel Ramírez Sánchez condemned the crime and recalled Coria Jiménez's background, who accompanied him during his political campaign and had been part of his circle of trust since then.
Coria Jiménez, who was also the uncle of the Director of the Institute of Inclusion and Attention to People with Disabilities in Celaya, is remembered as an elite officer with specialized training in Israel. The death of this expert police officer adds to the alarming figure of 61 agents killed in Guanajuato in the last year. In his statements, the mayor expressed his sorrow over the attack and assured that they would collaborate with the authorities to clarify this tragic event.
