Araceli González Melchor, the head of the Gender Police in Celaya, Guanajuato, was shot dead on Thursday morning while heading to work. In the armed attack, her son, who is also a member of the Gender Police in the municipality, was injured.
The events occurred around 6:00 AM at Ejido de Santa Teresa street, at the corner with Ejido de Santa Rita, in the La Ejidal neighborhood. Araceli was riding a motorcycle with her son when they were intercepted and shot at by armed individuals who fled in a vehicle.
Mother and son, both police officers in Celaya, were found lying next to a yellow motorcycle. Araceli González Melchor, known as ‘Chela’, was in charge of the Gender Police of the Secretary of Citizen Security of Celaya. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Araceli died at the scene, while her son was rushed to a hospital with gunshot wounds.
It was reported that both officers were heading to their shift at the North Command. The area of the attack was secured, and the intervention of the State Attorney General's Office was requested to carry out the corresponding investigations.
The Secretary of Citizen Security condemned the act and mentioned that joint operations would be initiated to find those responsible. Celaya is one of the 17 municipalities in Guanajuato where a Gender Violence Alert against Women has been declared.
It is worth noting that just last Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Álvaro Fernando Coria Jiménez, the head of security for the mayor of Celaya, was shot dead under similar circumstances. These events contribute to the number of police officers killed in Guanajuato, a state that has become particularly dangerous for law enforcement agents, recording a high number of such cases in recent years.
