Edwin Antonio Rubio López, known as 'El Max', was detained by the Secretary of National Defense on October 21 after a confrontation with members of the Sinaloa Cartel in Culiacán.
Rubio López is identified as one of the leaders of 'La Mayiza', a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel led by Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias 'El Mayo Flaco'. He is considered one of the main promoters of violence in Sinaloa and the war against the rival faction 'Los Chapitos'.
A warrant for his arrest was issued in 2019 as he is one of the main drug traffickers to the United States and is considered a generator of violence in Sinaloa and Baja California.
After his arrest, Rubio López was transferred to the Federal Social Rehabilitation Center No. 1, known as Altiplano, in the State of Mexico. He was charged with possession of firearms exclusive for the army, illegal cartridges, and drug possession. A District Judge from the State of Mexico ordered his justified preventive detention.
During the transfer to prison, a large security operation was implemented around the facilities of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime, where Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada's security operator was located.
It was revealed that Rubio López was transporting narcotics from Culiacán to San Felipe, Baja California, and then to Los Angeles, California. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was executed against him for qualified homicide in collaboration with the Baja California Prosecutor's Office.
At the detention site, 13 tactical vests, 9 ballistic helmets, 7 vehicles, 4 machine guns, 17 long firearms, 5 handguns, a Barret rifle, and several cartridges of different calibers were seized. The confrontation between military personnel and hitmen resulted in the death of 19 people, according to information from Sedena.
