On the morning of Thursday, January 23, an explosion was recorded at the cenotaph erected in memory of Édgar Guzmán López, the deceased son of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, in the parking lot of a shopping plaza in Culiacán, Sinaloa. The incident occurred around 8:00 AM when the monument was allegedly vandalized by unknown individuals in the parking lot of City Club in the Tres Ríos sector. It is believed that an armed group used an explosive that caused serious damage to the mausoleum, leaving only a two-meter tall cross standing and debris scattered around. Additionally, it was reported that a blue car was affected by the explosion and showed bullet impacts.
In videos shared on various online platforms, it can be seen how the vehicle suffered damage and the consequences of the explosion at the incident site. The authorities of the Sinaloa Attorney General’s Office will carry out the necessary investigations to determine what type of explosive was used in the attack on the cenotaph of Édgar Guzmán López.
Édgar Guzmán López, also known as 'El Moreno', was the eldest son of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán and was born on May 31, 1986. Tragically, at the young age of 22, on May 8, 2008, Guzmán López was murdered along with his cousins César Ariel Loera and Arturo Meza Cazares in Culiacán. The three young men were attacked by an armed group while they were in the parking lot of a shopping center in Desarrollo Urbano Tres Ríos. It is presumed that the crime may have been related to the struggle between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Beltrán Leyva.
After the tragic death of Édgar Guzmán López, a cenotaph was erected in his honor at the site where the events occurred. Every year, this monument is adorned with various elements such as flowers, beers, and vases in memory of 'El Chapo’s' son. In May 2024, on the anniversary of his death, the cenotaph was decorated with a striking floral arrangement surrounded by the letters 'E and G' made from red roses. These types of tributes are carried out annually on significant dates such as Guzmán López's birthday, Día de Muertos, Christmas, and New Year’s.
