Violent Clash Between Cartel Factions in Culiacán

In Sinaloa, specifically in Culiacán, violence has increased since September 2024 due to an intense confrontation between two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel: Los Chapitos and Los Mayitos. This dispute has resulted in over 800 homicides to date, exacerbating insecurity in the region. This conflict intensified following the detention in July 2024 of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada in the United States, leading to a struggle for territorial control between the two factions.

Recently, Jesús Guzmán Castro, known as 'Chuy' or 'Narizón' and a member of Los Mayitos, was arrested in Culiacán. Guzmán Castro faces charges of conspiracy and distribution of cocaine to the United States. He has been linked to crimes such as organized crime association, health violations, and operations with illicit resources. Authorities have indicated that he has an extradition order to the United States.

Guzmán Castro's detention was part of a joint action between the Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR), the Attorney General's Office (FGR), and the Security Cabinet. After intense investigations and international cooperation to dismantle criminal networks, Guzmán Castro was located in the La Campiña neighborhood of Culiacán, where he was moving between several addresses to evade capture.

The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, reported the detention on his social media, highlighting the importance of this action within the government's Security Strategy. The collaboration between various institutions such as the AIC of the FGR, SEMAR, the Secretary of National Defense, the National Guard, and the SSPC has been fundamental for this achievement, representing a step in the fight against organized crime in the region.
