Durango Elections Heat Up as PAN and PRI Prepare

The political landscape in Durango intensifies as the PAN and PRI plan to nominate their candidates against Morena for the upcoming elections in 2025. Tensions rise within the parties as they strategize for victory.

Durango Elections Heat Up as PAN and PRI Prepare

The political situation in Durango shows a clear opposition to the 4T, led by the PRI member Esteban Villegas, which favors the PAN and PRI in the municipalities of this state. The PAN group linked to former governor José Rosas Aispuro has demanded Romero Herrera not to intervene in the state candidacies and support the decisions of the local PAN members, who back the reelection of Toño Ochoa Rodríguez in the capital, a PAN member who won his position in a PRI-PAN alliance in 2022.

On the other hand, the national leadership of the PAN has expressed its support for federal deputy Verónica Pérez Herrera for the municipal presidency of Durango. In contrast, the PRI and the PAN will propose their own candidates in an election where a favorable scenario for Morena, the ruling party in the state governed by Rocío Nahle, is looming.

During a National Council of the PAN led by Romero, various topics were discussed, including the candidacies for city councils in Veracruz and Durango. Despite the distance separating the 4T from the opposition, a possible alliance between the PAN and the PRI, who occupy second and third place in preferences, could complicate the scenario even further.

The presence of Mauricio Kuri, governor of Querétaro, and Tere Jiménez, from Aguascalientes, at the PAN event generated controversy, especially because it took place prior to a campaign event in favor of the Judicial Election, something that the PAN has actively opposed since its approval. Despite everything, polls show Morena as the favorite to win the capital of Durango in 2025, reflecting the influence of the 4T even in states traditionally considered strongholds of the PAN or PRI.
