Injustice in Ecatepec: The Escandon Case

A year ago, the National Collective No more innocent prisoners was founded following an injustice suffered by a member of the Escandón family. Melina and Karina Escandón's brother, a police officer with 30 years of service, was imprisoned for two years and nine months in Chiconautla, Ecatepec, falsely accused of attempted homicide.

Inside the prison, the accused noticed the number of unjustly incarcerated individuals. The unfair accusation led to the death of his father from a heart attack when it was announced that he would be linked to the prosecution. The Escandón sisters sought support, and one of the places they turned to was the morning press conferences of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Eventually, the case reached the Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico, where it was determined that the investigation had flaws. The Escandón sisters organized protests during their brother's hearings, which attracted the attention of others in similar situations who joined the cause.

The investigation file mentioned a robbery committed by a man with physical characteristics different from those of the accused police officer. The complainant's mother was seriously injured in an altercation, but the police officer in question did not match the description of the aggressor.
