Over 1,200 Tons of Waste Collected in Guadalajara for Disease Prevention

The Guadalajara Urban Improvement Directorate reported that from January to March 2026, over 1,200 tons of scrap metal were collected as part of cleaning and sanitary prevention actions in the municipality. The program was implemented in 31 neighborhoods considered to be of high sanitary risk, with the aim of eliminating waste that can become infection foci and vector breeding grounds. The head of the department, Asareel Mata, shared that the actions were concentrated in areas identified by their epidemiological risk level. At these points, objects that accumulate water were removed, which helps prevent diseases such as dengue. "We have reached quite good numbers. Almost 1,200 tons of scrap metal have been collected from January to March 2026," he stated. In addition to scrap metal, it was shared that approximately 80 tons of construction debris were removed. Among the collected materials are furniture, disused appliances, tires, and other objects abandoned in public spaces. "This strategy is focused on eliminating the breeding grounds that spread diseases like dengue that we tapatíos have experienced," explained the local authorities. They highlighted that these works are part of a sanitary prevention strategy focused on reducing health risks. The service areas are determined using an epidemiological radar. It should be noted that this program operates through three daily routes, Monday through Friday, in coordination with the Jalisco Health Secretariat and the Municipal Medical Services Directorate. The service areas are determined based on the epidemiological radar. Likewise, it was reported that the collection of bulky items can be made at home or at Urban Improvement facilities. "We can collect these bulky items directly at the homes, as well as at the facilities of the Urban Improvement Directorate, located on Legazpi Avenue [...] but it is very important not to leave these objects in the public thoroughfare, in canals, or in regulator wells," indicated the municipal official.
