The Guanajuato Culture Secretariat has launched Opera Picnic, a free initiative aimed at bringing opera to new audiences with open-air performances at the Bicentennial Theater. For three days, from April 9 to 11, the public can enjoy large-format screenings in a relaxed atmosphere, designed for family or friendly gatherings, breaking with the traditional formality of opera. The program kicks off on Thursday, April 9, with Tosca, a production from the Bicentennial Theater itself (2019), a drama set in Napoleonic Rome that weaves together passion, betrayal, and power in the story of Floria Tosca, Cavaradossi, and the police chief Scarpia. On Friday, April 10, Madama Butterfly (Performing Arts Ensemble, 2023) will be presented, a tragedy that portrays the story of Cio-Cio-San, a young geisha who faces abandonment after placing her love in an American officer. To close, on Saturday, April 11, La Bohème (Bicentennial Theater, 2012), one of the most emblematic operas, arrives, following the life of artists in bohemian Paris and the love between Mimì and Rodolfo, marked by precariousness and fleetingness. Opera without barriers Opera Picnic bets on eliminating access barriers by offering free, open-air performances where the public can approach the genre for the first time or rediscover outstanding productions from the venue. The initiative also promotes audience formation by proposing a closer, more accessible, and everyday cultural experience that promotes the use of cultural spaces and the collective enjoyment of art. Experience for new audiences In addition to the artistic exhibition, the program incorporates a coexistence approach that transforms the relationship with opera, taking it to a more flexible and attractive ground for diverse audiences. With this strategy, the Guanajuato Culture Secretariat reinforces its commitment to an inclusive offering that dialogues with new generations and fosters interest in lyric art from a contemporary perspective.
