Investigation of Journalist Homicides in Guanajuato

The Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Guanajuato reported on the progress in the investigation of five homicides and one attempted murder against journalists in the region. In an extraordinary session of the State Council for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, it was stated that, in most cases, no evidence was found linking the crimes to the journalistic work of the victims.

In the case of the attempted murder of Ismael Flores Álvarez in Dolores Hidalgo, it was determined that the attack occurred while he was performing security guard duties, unrelated to his journalistic activity. During the session, Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo reiterated her support for the journalistic community and emphasized the importance of strengthening protection mechanisms for those practicing this profession.

Authorities also present at the meeting included the Secretary of Government, the Secretary of Security and Peace, the Secretary of Honesty, and the head of the Human Rights Attorney's Office of the State of Guanajuato. While the session was taking place, a group of journalists gathered outside to demand justice in the case of Kristian Uriel Martínez Zavala, whose homicide in Silao is being investigated with solid lines.

Regarding other cases, such as the murders of Alejandro Alfredo Martínez Noguez, Víctor Manuel Jiménez Campos, Gerardo Nieto Álvarez, and Ernesto Méndez Pérez, the Attorney General mentioned that no links have been found to the journalistic activity of the victims. In relation to the case of Israel Vázquez Rangel, a journalist from Salamanca, it was confirmed that he was linked to his profession, and two people have been sentenced for his murder.

In the case of Kristian Uriel Martínez Zavala, the Attorney General's Office is applying the Unified Protocol for Investigating Crimes Committed Against Freedom of Expression, reviewing his publications and previous reports of assaults related to his journalistic work.
