Sonora Death Investigation: Doctor Sought

The supplies and medications used continue to be analyzed by federal authorities. Meanwhile, the Attorney General's Office of the State of Sonora indicated that it is investigating the facts as negligent homicide due to medical malpractice. The main suspect is doctor Jesús Maximiliano “N”, who is currently a fugitive from justice. The Attorney General of Justice of the State of Sonora, Gustavo Rómulo Salas Chávez, informed at a press conference that an operation is underway to locate the probable responsible for negligent homicide related to the application of serums in Hermosillo. An arrest warrant is active against him, so a search operation is maintained at the national and international level. The Sonora Attorney General, Gustavo Salas Chávez, pointed out that the doctor could also be charged with an aggravating factor for “medical and technical responsibility.” The investigation began on March 30, following the death of a father and his son. The next day, the establishment was secured, where clinical files, medications, and medical solutions were collected, some with unknown content. The Sonoran prosecutor stated that although the products used had sanitary permits, the main line of investigation points to an inadequate preparation and administration of the serums. The investigated doctor was responsible for prescribing, preparing, mixing, administering the solutions, and supervising the involved personnel. To date, the Attorney General's Office has opened eight investigation files—not all related to the deaths, but to other medical procedures—and has carried out more than 117 investigative acts, including 51 interviews and statements, as well as chemical, toxicological, and histopathological analyses in a national laboratory. The number of people who have allegedly died from the application of vitamin serums in Sonora has increased to eight, the state Secretariat of Health reported on Tuesday. The institution detailed that 11 suspicious cases related to the intravenous application of solutions by the same doctor have been identified. In addition to the eight deceased, one more person remains hospitalized and two more have recovered. The state agency indicated that after the closure of the establishment where the procedures were performed, no new infections or incidents have been detected. Authorities stated that they are maintaining epidemiological surveillance actions, sanitary verification, sample analysis, as well as constant monitoring of the situation.
