The identity was verified through DNA tests carried out by authorities. After nearly seven years of searching, the confirmation of the young man's identity marks the closing of a painful stage for his family and for the search collectives that have accompanied the activist for years. The announcement was shared by the collective Young Searchers of Sonora, an organization that collaborated with the tracking and follow-up work of the case. Authorities and collectives indicated that although the remains found were worn by the passage of time and the conditions in which they were found, the DNA analyses were conclusive in identifying Marco Antonio. His disappearance occurred along with that of his younger brother, although the latter was subsequently released. Since then, his mother, Ceci Flores, became one of the most visible voices of the mothers' search movement in Mexico, fighting to locate missing persons and to highlight the issue. The discovery of the remains was initially announced by the activist herself, who shared on social media that she had found bone fragments that could belong to her son. However, at that time, official confirmation through genetic comparison was awaited. Family and collectives' reactions In the statement issued after the confirmation, the members of the collective expressed their pain and gratitude for the support provided throughout the process. They recognized the solidarity of other searching families, of the media that accompanied the case, and of those who shared information to keep the demand for location alive.
