The detention of an armed man in the La Escondida neighborhood, León, Guanajuato, was marked by an unusual event: a Municipal Police officer was injured after accidentally shooting himself with his own weapon during the pursuit. Noticing the presence of the police, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. During the chase, a police officer accidentally discharged his firearm, hitting another officer in the leg.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 28, after the 9-1-1 Emergency Center received a report of gunfire following a road altercation on Francisco Villa Boulevard, near the corner of Juan José Torres Landa. An ambulance was immediately requested to treat the injured officer, who was taken to a hospital and is reported to be stable. Despite the incident, the officers were able to detain the suspect, identified as Miguel, 27 years old, who was placed at the disposal of the State Attorney General's Office to determine his legal status.
The Secretariat of Security assured that the incident will be investigated internally to clarify the circumstances of the shooting and reinforce security measures in future operations. In this regard, the case has raised questions about the handling protocols of weapons within the corporation. According to witnesses, a driver of a gray Jeep SUV opened fire on another man, identified as Arturo, 28 years old, who was taken for medical attention. The presumed aggressor fled toward the Malecón del Río, triggering a search operation. Minutes later, authorities located the vehicle at Malecón del Río and Costa Azul.
