Impact of Trump's Presidency on Monterrey's Economy

The arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States has caused concern in the economy of Nuevo León (NL) and Mexico in general. Experts and academics warn about the possible implications of the 'Trump factor' in the region, especially regarding foreign direct investment and public policies.

The economist and professor at UANL, Jorge Omar Moreno, mentions that possible sanctions on U.S. industries in Mexico, along with additional tariffs, could impact Nuevo León, a key region for investment in the context of nearshoring. The uncertainty generated by threats of sanctions and a revision of the trade agreement has led to the postponement of important projects in the region, such as the Tesla project in NL.

Despite these threats, it is considered that Nuevo León could face a smaller impact compared to other parts of Mexico due to its favorable business environment, which continues to attract foreign companies.

Araceli González Uresti, a specialist in Global Affairs and International Politics, highlights Trump's expansionist rhetoric and the possible consequences for the region. Trade threats, particularly towards Canada and Mexico, put the trilateral trade agreement (USMCA) at risk, which could result in bilateral agreements. Additionally, Trump has expressed his intention to impose high tariffs on Mexican products.

Regarding the U.S. stance, the president of Caintra NL, Máximo Vedoya, believes that it is not about protectionism, but about defending the national industry. It is noted that countries like China do not comply with WTO regulations, while Mexico usually adheres to them.

In summary, Trump's presidency presents both opportunities and risks for the economy of Nuevo León, according to expert opinions.
